As a body contouring specialist, I often hear patients asking if they can create a slimmer, more toned abdominal area with liposuction alone. Liposuction is usually sufficient, but not always. Tummy tuck surgery, while a more invasive option, creates dramatic results for patients with excess skin and unwanted fat.
How Do They Differ?
A tummy tuck and liposuction have similar goals: creating a slimmer midsection. But the techniques used during each procedure are very different. During liposuction, I insert a thin tube called a cannula through small incisions and suction fat from the treatment area. The liposuction technique I use is called SAFELipo®, which minimizes trauma to the area by using a vibrating cannula.
A tummy tuck involves making a horizontal incision very low on the abdomen extending from one hip to the other. During the procedure, I remove excess skin and tighten abdominal muscles if they’ve been separated during pregnancy.
Combining the two procedures to sculpt attractive contours is also quite common.
